Winter Weather Decisions

Winter Weather Decisions
Posted on 02/13/2019
This winter has brought us more challenging weather conditions than we experience in a typical winter season, if there is such a thing as typical. And, winter is not over, so we expect there could be more tough days ahead.

We ask you to consider that there are days we must make a weighty, purposeful decision that is often met with varied levels of support or opposition. Our goal is to minimize the loss of instructional time while being mindful of student and staff safety.

In general, we will remain open. To cancel, delay or close schools early poses significant issues for families with transportation, child-care arrangements and work schedules.

You can always assume school is in session unless we communicate otherwise. We typically do not send out messages or post to our social media when school is in session to avoid confusion and misinformation, although we do enjoy engaging with our creative and persuasive students on Twitter!

Our team works diligently to access the most up-to-date weather forecast information and data as it applies to Grain Valley before making a recommendation to the Superintendent, who has the final authority on the decision.

While there is always pressure when surrounding school districts cancel, delay or release schools early, each district considers its own unique conditions first. It is helpful to know what surrounding districts are doing, but no other school district has the exact combination of conditions in place.

We are deliberate and thorough in our process and decision-making as it impacts every child in our district and we take weather-related decisions very seriously. It is for this reason that as parents and guardians you are encouraged to use your judgment to determine what is best for your children. We will support your decision to keep your child home on days we are in session and you feel conditions are unsafe.

Please email any comments, suggestions, or other feedback to us at news@gvr5.net.

Please report any student absence directly with your child's school.

We expect to have a revised last day of school to share with all families within the next week.
