About Us Home
Welcome to Grain Valley Schools!
Our Vision
A community where students belong, achieve, and are prepared to contribute and thrive in an evolving world.
About Grain Valley Schools
Grain Valley Schools is located in eastern Jackson County, Missouri. Our district covers forty square miles and includes all of the city of Grain Valley, plus parts of eastern Blue Springs, western Oak Grove, and some areas of unincorporated Jackson County.
Families tell us they move here because we offer the academic and extra-curricular opportunities for students like those of larger districts in the metro, but in a community that feels like a small town.
We have more than 4500 students in grades kindergarten through twelfth grade. Enrollment has doubled since the 2003-2004 school year.
Grain Valley Schools has four elementary schools, two middle schools, a high school, an alternative high school program and an early childhood center. We also offer part-time preschool for four-year-olds for a fee.
Grain Valley High School is consistently ranked among the country’s BEST HIGH SCHOOLS by U.S. News & World Report.
Our vision is to be the best model of student success whose graduates are prepared to excel in a complex world. Won't you join us?
Our district is also known as Grain Valley R-V.

Serving the children of Grain Valley since 1887
The first school was built in Grain Valley in 1887. The school was initially an elementary school but later included high school curriculum. The first high school graduating class had four students who graduated in 1909.
The original school was destroyed by a fire in November 1925. The following year, a new building opened on Main Street and served all grade levels until 1953, when an elementary school was built on the same lot. With the annexation of some outlying rural school districts, the Reorganized School District #5 of Jackson County (Grain Valley R-V) was formed in 1953.
Matthews Elementary opened in December of 1974 as a primary grade school.
In 1988, the school district purchased acreage on AA Highway, now Eagles Parkway, where Grain Valley High School and Sni-A-Bar Elementary were built.
In 1998, land was purchased on Ryan Road for the construction of South Middle School and Stony Point Elementary.
In 2005, the district expanded to three elementary schools with the completion of Prairie Branch Elementary. Stony Point Elementary was added in 2007. North Middle School was built in 2011. (Courtesy of Michael Gillespie and the City of Grain Valley)
Grain Valley Schools graduated the first class of 100+ students in 2004. The first class of 200+ graduated in 2015, and the first class of 300+ students graduated in 2018.
